Flooring experts: Tiles aren’t our only trick

As flooring experts, we work with customers to give them what they want. This owner asked us for a quote to tile her kitchen floor. When we got talking though, she told us what she really wanted was the timber floor she unearthed brought back to its former glory. She thought it couldn’t be done, the old tiles had been laid directly over these hardwood floors and there was a mess of glue left behind. But we assured her we could sand them back to give them a new lease on life.

We hired a floor sander for the day and got to work. Typically, timber floors take a a few passes with a sander to take off the old finish. With these floors, there was much more work to do. Taking back the glue to achieve a smooth surface took a whole day, but the results were fantastic.

After sanding, we filled the gaps and got the surface ready for staining. The owner chose a dark colour which continues throughout the house and we applied three coats over two days.

As you can see from the photos, this kitchen is completely gutted. This is an ideal time to have the floors taken care of as floor stain is messy to work with. A new kitchen is now ready to be installed over the top of these floors and will cover the areas which splashed onto the walls.

Do you love the look of timber floors but aren’t lucky enough to have any hiding under the carpet? Timber look tiles have come a long way since they first came out and look fantastic in most applications. You can check out National Tile’s range here.

Bathroom tiling in Laverton

  • Hall view Laverton tiling
  • Floor view bathroom tiling
  • Bathroom view floor around shower
  • Shower tiling Laverton bathroom
  • Shower full view moulded shower base
  • full shower view moulded base cream

We recently completed some tiling in Laverton that came with its own set of learnings for the owner. With a few unforeseen costs that got in the way, the budget blew out and they opted to keep the moulded shower base. Renovations come with tough decisions!

Structurally sound, there is nothing wrong with this base. It’s a standard size which will fit an off she shelf shower screen which will go some way to wrangling the budget back under control. But with those white tiles on the wall, it stands out for all the wrong reasons.

Luckily, we live in a time with innovative products that can fix this up fairly hassle free. For those prepared to roll up their sleeves, a product like Rust-Oleum Tub & Tile could do the job for less than a hundred dollars. Cheap, right?

For those who struggle with a paint brush, don’t despair! There are plenty of specialist painting companies refinishing these kinds of surfaces every day.

Worried about durability? These products are made with epoxy paint which is incredibly strong. Provided the surface is well prepared, it will adhere well and be durable for years to come. And once this base matches the wall tiles? You’ll barely even see it. And that is the point, isn’t it?

All in all, though, the choice in tiles here is on point. In an older home with a small bathroom keeping to a neutral tile in a simple design is ideal. This room feels open and has a clean new look which will haul it into the twenty first century.

New build tiling in Tarneit

This tiling job in Tarneit was a new build house. Keeping three key colours in this room makes it looks massive. White tiles laid floor to ceiling on three walls bounce light from every surface. And once the mirror is installed the effect will be amplified.

The feature tiles sit above the vanity and keep the white theme flowing. White penny round tiles are becoming popular as a mosaic alternative. Although there aren’t a lot of them, carrying them from wall to wall makes them effective.

The shower is surrounded by a hob which separates the main floor. This allows the shower base to slope and drain water away without affecting the rest of the floor. The shower screen will sit on the hob, and once the bathroom is fitted out will be barely noticeable.

Recessed shelves are a contemporary alternative to soap shelves or shower caddy. If you are wondering how to incorporate one into your bathroom design, check out Highgrove Bathrooms. They have a range of pre-built tile ready solutions in a range of sizes to suit your bathroom.

New shower tiled in Newport

The finishing touches on this shower tiled in Newport included chrome fittings and a new shower screen. Planning a project can be painful when you start to tally how many tradesmen you will need for the job and how to coordinate them on site. We were able to help out by installing the screen and fitting off the shower.

And the owner was happy with the results. A clean new shower for the family to enjoy, free of mouldy old silicone and cracked grout. The adjustable arm on the shower head is accessible even for the smallest people in the house. Even the shower mixer was a marked improvement on the temperamental taps the owners were used to.

So when you are planning your next project, think about how many tradesmen it takes to get the job done. Can some jobs be done by the same crew? We can install shower screens for you. We can fit off tapware. And we can absolutely caulk the joins.

Some people spend a fortune having a screen measured and installed when in reality most off the shelf products will fit. If you look at the screens from Reece, you will see most of the measurements have ranges. Yes, they are adjustable to your space.

If an enclosed shower screen isn’t your style, check out this post where we tiled a wet room with a walk in shower.

Bathroom tiling in Point Cook

This was a new build tiling job in Point Cook we completed a while back. We returned to site after the fittings were installed and were amazed at the final product. Both rooms make the best use of light and the tiles are the feature of the space.

These bathrooms may have different colour schemes, but both use 300×600 tiles upright on the walls. The results are dramatic, giving the illusion of ultra high ceilings. The LED lighting reflects on what are lower sheen tiles and having large windows in both bathrooms allows for a moodier colour scheme.

With darker tiles in the main bathroom, the white freestanding bath stands out for all the right reasons. Its shape and contours are framed perfectly and the continuation on the floor is stunning.

When considering what pattern you should use on your project, this handy link from Houzz explains the pros and cons. While it may look great in a magazine, you need to think about how it will look in your space.

Balcony tiling in Hoppers Crossing

We recently completed a tiling job in Hoppers Crossing, this time with a large balcony area. The owners used 400×400 tiles which was an ideal size for the space, and with a light grey colour they compliment the white accents well.

When tiling in an outdoor space, you must consider the drainage. Usually this is taken care of when a balcony is built, but it is something to keep in mind when choosing tiles. Why? If you look closely, you can see where this area slopes and how the tiles carry on seamlessly.

When using a larger tile, this becomes harder to achieve. Often you will see tiles which are split to accommodate a sloping floor which detracts from the look. Is this something that you would be prepared to live with? Best to make those kinds of decisions before your tiler arrives.

If your space has inadequate drainage, you will need to consider putting in drains as part of the design. And before you go off to Bunnings, you may want to look at some nifty options that can tie in with your new tiles. Check out Stormtech’s range of tile insert drains.

Traditional tiles in Yarraville

These tiles in Yarraville are a more traditional take on a heritage style bathroom. Having decided on a claw foot bath, the owner chose cream-coloured subway tiles on the wall and glossy floor tiles in a patchwork design. Look closer and you can see these are 300×300 tiles which seem like 9 individual tiles. A good trick for those who want to have less grout to keep clean.

On the walls the cream-coloured tiles work well with the burgundy and the owner made a feature of the floor tiles inside the recessed shelves. They fitted the bath against the back wall underneath the shelves to compliment the floor. A balanced approach between contemporary and yesteryear.

Achieving a luxury look with modern products in a heritage style bathroom can be difficult. One wrong move and you can end up with tiles that clash and fittings that look tacky. If you have something like this planned, check out Olde English Tiles for inspiration and top quality products.

New build tiling in Caroline Springs

This large house makes the best use of space by choosing the right tiles for the job. Keeping a clean look in the bathrooms, the same tiles are used on the floor and the walls. With the wall tiles reaching the ceiling these bathrooms have clean lines and make the best use of the LED lighting.

With open plan living downstairs, using 600×600 tiles opens this space even further and carries you from room to room.

The balcony upstairs uses 300×600 tiles which gives the illusion of a longer outdoor room.

This Beaumont Tiles article covers floor to ceiling tiling and how you can make this work in your bathroom.

Alfresco tiles in Eynesbury

This outdoor living space looks amazing with 300×300 charcoal tiles adding a contemporary look. The offset pattern in an outdoor space has a paver like look without the hassle of sinking over time and encroaching weeds.

Choosing a dark colour outside not only looks fantastic, it also looks cleaner for longer. When choosing outdoor tiles you should consider if they are antislip.

National Tiles have a selection of outdoor tiles with a non-slip surface, make sure you ask your tile retailer if they are safe to use outdoors.
